Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans

Step into Ostend and enter Ensor’s world

Sea shells, lace, rare stuffed fish, old books, prints, jams, china, an inextricable jumble of assorted objects…

Currently intriguing visitors to our Sackler Galleries, Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans reveals the art of Belgian artist James Ensor through the eyes of one of the most significant contemporary artists today.

Ensor’s paintings are infused with carnival colours and filled with leering masks and skulls inspired by the wares of his family’s curiosity shop in Ostend. Through Ensor’s own words, discover the artist’s hometown and source of inspiration in this short video.

And explore the stories behind the artworks, gain insight into the man behind the mask, and see inside the show in our new series of short videosas curator Adrian Locke introduces four key works in the exhibition.

Until 29 January 2017. Friends of the RA go free.
